Frida in America was a podcast I listened to as I studied Frida's life. I understood that Frida was told after her accident that she most likely would not be able to have children. In those times, women were thought to be good to serve the home and procreate only, so when she learned that she would not be able to fulfill her role as a female, she decided to declare herself as being reborn as a male. She called herself Leonardo. To me, her decision was very fictional and fantasy-like, it took me to a world of brightness, almost cartoony with beautiful exaggerated desert skies and plants. Maybe I am influenced by the world now, where I feel that transgender individuals are very colorful, and they truly enjoy who they become. This is a fun, vibrant door or window to the fantasy world that I imagine Frida creating sometimes for herself. This piece is one of my absolute favorites and it made me happy when I'd see it. I liked to put myself in it, like in that Mary Poppins scene when they jump inside the painting... join in!

Style choice: I used a combination of metallic colors to make them really shine the way the hues of the desert glisten with the sun. This style is a new one for me and I want to play with it a lot more in the future.
